How can I remove the ball from the trackball module?

You should be able to remove the ball from the trackball module according to these instructions. Sometimes, however, it takes quite a bit of force to unfasten the ring of the trackball module, in which case you can unscrew the two large screws in the bottom of the module then separate the top and bottom trackball case parts by hand. This way, you'll have easy access to the ring to unfasten it.
